board president

January is School Board Appreciation Month, a time to recognize the dedicated individuals who help shape the future of education in our community. At Saginaw ISD, we are proud to celebrate the invaluable contributions of our Board of Education members who work tirelessly to serve our students, staff, and local districts. As part of this celebration, we sat down with our board members to learn more about their experiences, backgrounds, and their vision for the future of Saginaw ISD. Through this special blog series, "Our Board, Our Story™," we invite you to get to know the passionate leaders who are committed to empowering student success and making a positive impact on education every day.

Stay tuned as we share their stories and highlight the incredible work they do to support education across our county!

Up first in our series is Ruth Coppens, our longest-serving board member and current Board President, whose dedication and leadership have been instrumental in shaping the success of Saginaw ISD.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WANT TO JOIN THE BOARD IN THE FIRST PLACE?

My journey began as a parent volunteer at Merrill Community Schools. The elementary playground bordered a busy roadway, and we saw the need for a fence to keep students safe. When the principal and superintendent couldn’t approve the project, we brought it to the Board of Education for approval, which was granted. That first board meeting sparked my interest in school governance. I served on the Merrill Community Schools Board of Education for 13.5 years before learning about the ISD's work. After a couple of attempts, I successfully ran for a position on the ISD board.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR ROLE AS A BOARD MEMBER?

The board of education plays a critical role in shaping the educational experience for students in our member districts. From implementing policies to supporting staff and students, our goal is to create a positive and impactful learning environment.

HOW DO YOU SEE YOUR WORK IMPACT THE COMMUNITY ON A DAILY BASIS?

I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the positive progress in our schools. From seeing students grow into productive citizens to helping staff succeed in classrooms, the impact of our work is tangible and rewarding.

WHERE DO YOU SEE SAGINAW ISD IN 5 YEARS?

I envision Saginaw ISD continuing its success as a vital support system for local districts and students from birth to 26. By collaborating with other agencies and adopting best practices, we will continue to innovate and provide top-tier services.

WHAT HAS IT BEEN LIKE SERVING SAGINAW ISD FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS?

Serving Saginaw ISD and recently as president has been an incredible journey. It’s been a privilege to work alongside dedicated board members, staff, and leaders who are all committed to student success.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED OVER YOUR TIME OF SERVICE?

Education is ever-changing. From shifting laws and policies to integrating new technology, we must continually adapt to serve our students effectively. Lifelong learning isn’t just for students—it’s for everyone in education.

WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN MOST PROUD OF IN SAGINAW ISD'S GROWTH?

I’m proud of how transparent and innovative Saginaw ISD has remained. We consistently share ideas, serve our local districts, and strive to create a better educational environment for everyone. The ultimate highlight is seeing the faces of success during graduation ceremonies, as students cross the stage to receive their diplomas or completion certificates.
