The Saginaw County Health Department's leadership team came out to Hartley for a day of team building on Tuesday. In recognition of Native American Heritage Month, we are pleased to present the work of Ojibwe craftsman Mr. Earl Nyholm, who constructed the birch bark canoe that is on display at the Hartley Outdoor Education Center. #HartleyOEC
Congratulations to our Parent Member of the Year for 2022 through our Great Start Collaborative, Mr. Lionel Grant!
Mr. Earl Nyholm, Ojibwe craftsman, built this birch bark canoe using natural materials back in the 1970s. Birch bark canoes were used for transportation in the warmer months by Native peoples in the Great Lakes area. French traders later adopted the use of the birch bark canoe for moving trade goods and furs throughout the Great Lakes’ interior regions.
Birch bark canoes are typically made around a cedar frame with a birch bark covering. A thick layer of birch bark is strong and waterproof, making it an ideal covering for this purpose. For additional durability, the inner layer of the bark is turned to face the outside of the canoe. Spruce roots are tied in to connect the components, and pine pitch seals off the seams.
This canoe is light and strong, measuring about 14 feet in length and weighing close to 50 pounds. The canoe and its hand-made paddles are on display for students and visitors here at Hartley. We appreciate the privilege of being the curators of this fine example of Native American craftsmanship by Mr. Nyholm.

Feeling thankful for Wendy Malkiewicz, Quality Improvement Coach, for the Great Start to Quality Eastern Resource Center. Wendy supports child care programs and educators in creating and meeting goals to support them in providing high quality care and education. Wendy co-facilitates our home-based learning community bridging professional learning to program implementation. Her service area includes Huron, Lapeer, and Tuscola. Wendy is an excellent trainer and tackles projects that helps to support our full team. Thank you Wendy!
